KRUGERSDORP, WEST RAND ACCOMMODATION - BED & BREAKFAST, SELF-CATERING & GAME LODGES

Krugersdorp is a mining city in the West Rand of Gauteng, South Africa. Krugersdorp was founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius and named after Paul Kruger.  Apart from gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime are also mined in the area. Krugersdorp is the site of the December 1880 gathering at which more than 6,000 men vowed to fight for the Transvaal's independence. When gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand, a need arose for a major town in the west of the reef.  The government bought part of the farm Paardekraal and named the new town after the Transvaal President Paul Kruger. The British built a concentration camp here during the Second Boer War to house Boer women and children.  In 1952 the West Rand Consolidated Mine was the first in the world to extract Uranium as a byproduct of the gold refining process.  Krugersdorp no longer has a separate municipal government, and the municipality has become part of the Mogale City municipality, along with surrounding towns.

RANDFONTEIN ACCOMMODATION, WEST RAND

Randfontein is a gold mining town in western Gauteng, South Africa, 45 km west of Johannesburg. With the Witwatersrand gold rush in full swing, mining financier JB Robinson bought the farm Randfontein and, in 1889, floated the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company. The town was established in 1890 to serve the new mine and was administered by Krugersdorp until it became a municipality in 1929.  Randfontein Estates had the largest stamp mill in the world, with 600 stamps.  A pretty sheet of water, Riebeeck Lake, is among the attractions of the town.  Today Randfontein has a population of 181,940, which incorporates Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus.

ROODEPOORT ACCOMMODATION, WEST RAND

Roodepoort is a city in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Johannesburg's most famous botanical garden, Witwatersrand National Botanical Gardens (now renamed Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens in honour of Walter Sisulu), is located in Roodepoort.  In 1884, brothers Fred and Harry Struben, having discovered gold on the farm Wilgespruit at the western end of the Witwatersrand, were granted concessions to mine the area. When George Harrison's find at Langlaagte came to light and gold fever took hold, the Strubens brothers were joined by a swarm of gold diggers. Though the Confidence Reef bore little gold and their mine was unprofitable, the ramshackle town that grew around it became the Roodepoort municipality in 1904. Incorporating the towns of Hamberg, Florida and Maraisburg, Roodepoort became a city in 1977.

Residential Areas in the new developing parts of Roodepoort are said to be expanding at a faster pace than anywhere else in South Africa. This growth is said to be fueled by various factors such as the fast growing Black middle class, the close proximity to other large Gauteng cities, an already established and advanced infrastructure and much more.  Roodepoort no longer has a separate municipal government, and the municipality is part of the City of Johannesburg.
