When Divers, Fishermen and eco-adventurers can resist the call of the great African outdoors no more, they return to one place - Sodwana.

In the heart of Maputaland, close to the pristine Lake Shazibe nestling behind the world's highest natural dunes, a short distance from the sea, Sodwana Bay Lodge has been carefully designed to match the rustic eco-orientated nature of the region.

The warm Indian Ocean currents of the Moçambique Channel wash onto the shores of Maputaland, a timeless realm of astounding bio-diversity and beauty.  Here, on the relatively untouched eastern seaboard of southern Africa, wide lakes and extensive river estuaries shimmer with life, fertile swamp and sand forest abound with rare and protected animal and plant species, while towering dunes shelter golden beaches from the lush interior.

Africa's renowned "Big-5" - elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard - are complimented by a rich array of antelope and bird species. Here the "Big-5" can become the prized "Big-6" as humpback whales spout and gambol close to shore.

Fishing in Sodwana Bay

The diversity of fish and invertebrates found on Africa's southern-most coral reefs make Sodwana one of South Africa's prime destinations for angling. Game fishing in the marine reserve has yielded record catches over the years, and Sodwana Bay has emerged as one of the top Bill Fisheries in South Africa, with Marlin and Sailfish taken on a regular basis.

Magnum Fishing Charters, operated by the highly knowledgeable Richard Scott, is based at Sodwana Bay Lodge.

Diving in Sodwana Bay

Sodwana Bay Lodge Scuba Centre boasts the only PADI 5-STAR IDC diving school in the district certified to train and license divers to international instructor level.

The school enjoys an unrivalled position amongst the chalets in the lodge, with the main training area only a few metres from the well-stocked dive shop. A custom built 3m deep dive pool right next to the reed and thatch lecture room, has both a deep and shallow end, as well as a purpose built practice bench to simulate diving backwards from a dive boat.

The school offers various courses and you could be qualified as an Openwater diver in only five days (four nights) or as an Openwater Advanced diver in three days. We also offer Nitrox fills and courses, as well as 8-day Instructor IDC courses. The school's instructors live in the Lodge and will help you in any way they can.
