3 Top Destinations To Visit In Botswana This Year

Botswana is a landlocked African country with a lot to offer its visitors. The country borders Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, making it an ideal place to visit for safaris, adventure and more. The country’s capital is Gaborone, which is well known for the Gaborone Game Reserve, a reserve that shelters many native animals, including impala and wildebeest, as well as local and migratory birds.

1.  Mokolodi Nature Reserve

This private and not-for-profit reserve is located in southern Botswana and is hosted on 30 square km (1 square mile) of donated land and is situated just 10 km (6 miles) from the country’s capital. A large range of African bird, game and reptile species can be seen in the reserve, including many that are threatened with extinction. Among these animals are white rhinoceros, of which the reserve is part of the national breeding programme, which is set to rebuild Botswana’s national herd. Other animals on view in Mokolodi Nature Reserve are mountain reedbuck, South African cheetah and giraffe, sable, red hartebeest, gemsbok, kudu, spotted hyena, leopard, elephant and waterbuck.

2. Kgale Hill

Another great destination on your tailor-made luxury holiday in Botswana is a great hiking destination. Kgale Hill is located in the city of Gaborone and bears the nickname “The Sleeping Giant” for its shape. The mountain peaks at 1,287 m (4,222 ft) above sea level and used to host a television repeater. These days it is a popular tourist destination. There are three trails to choose from when hiking Kgale and each takes around one hour to reach the summit. Along the way, visitors are likely to spot cheeky troops of baboons. Naturally there are impressive, 360 degree views over the city and countryside from the top.

Of interest to note, Kgale Hill was used as a set for the BBC comedy series, “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” which ran between 2009 and 2010. The government of Botswana cleverly invested $5 million in the television series to help develop the site to attract tourism.

3.  The Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Located in northern Botswana, the Okavango Delta is a sprawling river delta, known for its endless and beautiful grassy plains, which are seasonally flooded. This makes the delta and Moremi Game Reserve the ideal location for spotting elephants, hippos, and crocodiles. Dugout canoes are available to explore the river delta, while on dry land, leopards, lions, rhinos, and giraffes can be spotted. The area is known for its many luxury safari camps and private animal reserves. Activities on offer include horse riding safaris and scenic flights over the wilderness area. Boating activities, fishing adventures, and bird watching are also popular here.

Enjoy a luxury safari adventure in Botswana, exploring the various private and national game reserves and meeting the friendly and welcoming local people along the way.
