Camps
Bay is an affluent suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. In the African
winter it is a hotbed of European tourists as well as local South Africans
down for a beach holiday. It hosts beach volleyball tournaments as well
as a refreshing nightlife. Camps Bay is named after an invalid sailor,
Ernst Friedrich von Kamptz, who settled there in 1778. The back of
Table Mountain, the Table Mountain cableway and the Twelve Apostles Mountain
Range form a backdrop to the Camps Bay family beach. The surf is strong
here and there is no resident lifeguard, but a rescue helicopter patrols
regularly. The grass verge flanked by the Camps Bay tidal pool offers shady,
wind-free barbecue spots. Trendy Shops, restaurants, a hotel, chemist,
banks and police station are close to the beach. The best time of
the year to visit Camps Bay as a tourist is November through March, allthough
it can be a bit windy during November and December. The plethora of restaurants
with the beach just across the road gives you many things to do in Camps
Bay, and being just over the hill (about 10 minutes drive) from central
Cape Town, it's the perfect location for your summer away from home. |

Less than
an hour north of Cape Town in the Winelands, Paarl is a beautiful
old town dominated by a huge granite pluton that, after rain, gleams like
a pearl, and from which the town gets its name. (The Dutch word for pearl
is paarl.) Paarl has one of the longest main roads in the country – at
about 11km – and it’s lined with some lovely old buildings. For a
bit of a historical flashback you could visit the Afrikaans Language Museum
or even drive up to the Afrikaans Language Monument – a monstrous hilltop
structure that’s visible for miles. It’s an interesting place to visit
and, whatever you think of the motivation of its construction, there’s
a lovely view from up there. But you’d be more likely to visit Paarl
for wine. There are numerous lovely wineries, some of which also make home
made cheeses and liqueur brandy. Olive farms produce olive oil and various
varieties of bottled olives and Paarl is filled with lovely restaurants. |

Simon's
Town is a village and a naval base in South Africa, near Cape Town.
It is located on the shores of False Bay, on the eastern side of the Cape
Peninsula. For more than two centuries it has been an important naval base
and harbour (first for the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy).
False Bay is located to the southeast of Cape Town but to the west of Cape
Agulhas and Simon's Town is consequently located roughly on the border
between the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. The town is named after Simon
van der Stel, an early governor of the Cape Colony. The land rises steeply
from near the water's edge and the picturesque village is boxed in along
the shoreline by the heights above. The small harbour itself is not a particularly
good natural harbour and is protected from swells by a breakwater that
was built with thousands of huge blocks of sandstone quarried out of the
face of the mountain above. Simon's Town is now in effect a suburb of greater
Cape Town. It is the terminus of a railway line that runs south from the
central business district of Cape Town. In places the railway line hugs
the steep eastern shore of False Bay quite spectacularly and in bad weather
foam from some heavy swells will fly up and wet the trains! One of
the best beaches on the Cape Peninsula, Boulders Beach, is located a few
kilometres to the south of Simon's Town. Here small, secluded coves with
white sandy beaches and calm, safe, warm, shallow waters are interspersed
between huge rounded boulders of Cape granite that form low cliffs and
small caves. There has been a colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach
since 1985. There is no record of the birds having lived here prior to
that date, so their decision to settle in an area already well-utilized
by humans is remarkable. There are only three penguin populations on the
mainland in southern Africa. |
